What Does the Science Really Say About Red Light Therapy?

A recent article in New Scientist looked at the science behind red light therapy and came to a fairly sensible conclusion:

A lot of the marketing is exaggerated.
But there is genuine evidence that red and near-infrared light can help reduce inflammation and support healing within the skin.
That matters because inflammation sits at the heart of many of the skin concerns we treat every day.

Acne
This is probably where the evidence is strongest.
Studies suggest that blue and red light can significantly improve acne.
Blue light helps reduce acne-causing bacteria, while red light appears to calm inflammation and support recovery.

At Temple Clinic, we see LED as a useful addition to a broader acne plan:
Calming inflamed skin
Supporting healing
Reducing irritation
Helping sensitive skin tolerate treatment better

Rosacea
Rosacea is fundamentally an inflammatory condition, so it makes sense that some patients find LED therapy soothing.
The evidence is still limited, but studies have shown improvements in redness and skin tone.

We often use LED:
After laser/microneedling and radiofrequency treatments alongside rosacea skincare
To calm reactive skin
To support barrier recovery

Not because it “cures” rosacea, but because calmer skin generally behaves better.

Anti-ageing
This is where social media can overpromise.
There is some evidence that red light therapy may improve skin texture and fine lines, but results are mixed.

In reality, LED is best viewed as:
Supportive
Anti-inflammatory
Recovery-enhancing
Helpful for overall skin quality

Rather than a replacement for treatments like:
RF microneedling
Laser rejuvenation
Injectables
Prescription skincare

One Important Point
Interestingly, the article also questioned whether some at-home devices may actually be too powerful.
More is not always better with light therapy.

That is why proper protocols, appropriate wavelengths and realistic expectations matter.

At Temple Clinic, we do not position LED as magic or as a standalone fix.

We use it because healthier, calmer, less inflamed skin tends to recover better, tolerate treatment better and function better over time.
