Vikki

Having always had problematic skin, Vikki, aged 32, prided herself on being able to manage it with a good skincare regime.

Her confidence took a real blow in spring 2020 however, when she found that, despite her best efforts, nothing she could do was helping. She was horrified to learn that she had rosacea – a condition she knew nothing about but looking online, learned that it was not something that was going to clear up.

The constant background redness and stinging pain were really distressing and if anything triggered a flush, her sensitive skin reacted badly, and could stay red for hours.

She went in search of professional help, firstly to her GP and then to a private dermatology clinic. She was dismayed at the attitude and lack of interest shown by the “experts” she approached. The rushed appointment and lack of explanation provided by the dermatology clinic when she was given products to take home, again left her Googling in order to try and understand what to do.

“It was such a relief to come to Temple – from my very first communication with the clinic to meeting Dr Sam, I felt listened to. Even though I initially doubted whether they could really help, it was just lovely to feel that somebody cared enough to take the time to explain things properly.”

“I USED TO ACTIVELY AVOID SOCIALISING BECAUSE MY FACE THROBBED AND I WAS SO EMBARRASSED BY MY SKIN.”

The whole ethos at Temple has made a difference – Dr Sam and Vikki discussed every aspect of her life that could be affecting her skin – from her diet to how she managed stress, and how rosacea was affecting her emotional well-being. Dr Sam explained that there can be many triggers that can provoke the initial flare-up of rosacea – the underlying predisposition was always there – and it is not uncommon for it to appear for the first time in an individual after the age of 30. She suggested that the stress of Covid-19 and the lockdown were likely to be significant stressors.

Vikki was provided with skincare samples to try and advised to have a course of Omnilux light therapy. Along with all this incredible treatment she was provided with support and encouragement – any question or concern that she had was promptly answered and she stopped feeling so alone.

Over the next 2 months, Vikki noticed that her skin felt calmer. She was encouraged to keep a skin diary so when she had an episode of flushing, she became more attuned to what could provoke these episodes – stress being the most obvious one. Vikki consulted with a nutritionist and paid more attention to eating a healthy Mediterranean style diet – all with good effect.

“ROSACEA IS A CHRONIC CONDITION, I WILL HAVE FLARE-UPS FROM TIME TO TIME – BUT THEY ARE MUCH MORE MANAGEABLE, I NO LONGER FEEL OVERWHELMED.”

Coming to Temple has been one of the best decisions Vikki has made – “when I look back at how my skin condition was affecting my life I am astonished at the improvement in my quality of life in such a short period of time – I used to actively avoid socialising because I was so embarrassed by my skin – and even simple daily activities such as trying to work from home when I just could not concentrate because my face throbbed became a real chore.”

Vikki was enthused by her experience stating, “I can feel the “real me” returning – I know that rosacea is a chronic condition and that I will have flare-ups from time to time – but they are so much more manageable, and I no longer feel overwhelmed. My family are delighted to see me feeling more positive – I realise how much my unhappiness was affecting them too – knowing that I can rely on the staff at Temple to be there for me has given me the confidence and determination to live my life to the full once more ☺”
